Olathe, KS – On Wednesday night at the Austins Bar n Grill was packed with patrons and families having dinner and enjoying the rare February warm temperature.  When all of a sudden a man walks into the bar and opens fire with a handgun, striking 3 people.

At approximately 7:15PM Olathe officers were dispatched to Austins Bar & Grill in the 2100 block of 151st street in response to reports of gun shots being fired.

Upon arrival, the officers located 3 adult males with gunshot wounds.  The officers rendered 1st aid to the victims until Johnson County MED-ACT arrived and transported the men to local area hospitals.

Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, died at a hospital, while 32-year-old Alok Madasani and 24-year-old Ian Grillot are hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

Witnesses said Grillot, a Marine, had stepped in and tried to stop the shooter.  According to Local News KCTV 5.

Grillot said in an interview from his hospital bed that when the gunfire started, he hid until nine shots had been fired and he thought the suspect’s gun magazine was empty.

“I got up and proceeded to chase him down, try to subdue him,” Grillot said in a video from the University of Kansas Health System. “I got behind him and he turned around and fired a round at me.”

Grillot said that the bullet went through his hand and into his chest, just missing a major artery.

“It’s not about where he (the victim) was from or his ethnicity,” Grillot said. “We’re all humans, so I just did what was right to do.”

Police are in the process of interviewing dozens of witnesses. Detectives are combing through evidence, trying to determine the shooter’s motive.

“They are going to try to find video, they are going to interview and get statements from witnesses, document this guy’s demeanor, his behaviors, and his statements, as well as what else was going on in this bar,” explained retired KCPD detective Pete Edlund.

Adam Purinton, 51, was taken into custody about five hours after the shooting after he told a bartender at an Applebee’s some 70 miles away in Clinton, Missouri, that he had been involved in a shooting. He has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

On a personal note, my wife and I were on a date night 1 mile down the road at the Sports Shack & Brew Pub when we saw all the Police cruisers fly by and within a few minutes we had gotten word of the shooting and that the shooter was still on the loose.

It was interesting to see peoples reactions to a shooter on the loose and so close to our location.  I spoke with one of the owners, John Lucas and we kept our eyes open and stayed on alert.  Lucas eased the patrons and we kept going out front and scanning the area.

The owners of the Sports Shack & Brew Pub, soon to be the Flying Vee,  posted their condolences to the victims and Austins Bar n Grill along with the city of Olathe.
