In a grisly discovery, more than 1,000 dead animals were found in a warehouse in an industrial complex in Southern California on Friday.

Reptiles, birds and fish were among the dead animals found after officers responded to a commercial building, Montclair Police Department Sgt. Minook told KTLA 5. Montclair is about 33 miles east of Los Angeles.

“There was little ventilation provided,” the Inland Valley Humane Society and S.P.C.A. said on Facebook.  “Rescue Officers could not find any food or water for the birds. The warehouse was covered in feces and filled with trash.”

Almost 2,000 chickens, parakeets, lovebirds, and other exotic birds were rescued from an industrial warehouse this morning on the 4500 block of Arrow Highway in Montclair. Additionally, dozens of exotic fish were found at the location.

Inland Valley Humane Society & SPCA investigators, with the help of Montclair Police Department and the Department of Health, responded after hearing noises coming from the industrial complex. Between 1,000 and 2,000 chicks and chickens as well as 100 exotic birds were being kept in appalling conditions. There was little ventilation provided. Rescue Officers could not find any food or water for the birds. The warehouse was covered in feces and filled with trash.

All of the birds are currently being evaluated and cared for by the Inland Valley Humane Society SPCA. The chicks and chickens found will be housed and cared for by Inland Valley Humane Society & SPCA staff at the Boys Republic in Chino. The remaining exotic birds will be taken to the Inland Valley Humane Society & SPCA. The owner of the birds was arrested earlier this week on unrelated charges. The owner now faces several felony animal cruelty charges. Police will not release his identity or his race.

All of the birds are part of an ongoing investigation. Their adoption availability is pending at this time because of the investigation.
