US officials stated they were “disgusted” and “outraged” at what could possibly be labeled a war crime if definitive evidence surfaces suggesting that the targeting of noncombatants was purposeful.

It is still uncertain just who and what struck the convoy — though initial speculation has left the sights centered on the Syrian regime.  Still, while no group has taken responsibility for the act, US sources have made rhetorical moves hinting at Russia’s possible involvement.

“The destination of this convoy was known to the Syrian regime and the Russian federation and yet these aid workers were killed in their attempt to provide relief to the Syrian people,” a State Department press release states.

There is a small possibility that this attack was in retaliation for the accidental friendly-fire casualties that resulted from the United States’ Saturday airstrike that left 62 Syrian soldiers dead.  If it is related, President Obama will have to deal with the one thing that scares him most: an international conflict with another major power.
