The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) have just concluded a six-week nationwide sweep of suspected gang members resulting in 1,378 arrests — the largest such gang sweep in history.

The operation was part of “Community Shield” and targeted gang members and associates involved in transnational criminal activity, including drug trafficking, weapons smuggling, human smuggling, sex trafficking, murder and racketeering, FOX reports.

“Gangs threaten the safety of our communities, not just in major metropolitan areas, but in our suburbs and rural areas, too,” ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan said Thursday. “Gang-related violence and criminal activity present an ongoing challenge for law enforcement everywhere.”

Of the 1,378 people arrested, 445 were foreign nationals from 21 countries ranging from Guatemala to Kazakhstan to Mauritania. The rest were U.S. citizens. Nearly 1,100 were known gang members and affiliates – including 137 Bloods, 118 Sureños, 104 MS-13 gang-members and 104 Crips.

The charges ranged from murder and assault to narcotics trafficking.

Derek Benner, deputy associate director of ICE HSI, described it as the “largest gang surge to date.” Benner announced that 280 people were arrested on immigration violations and will face deportation proceedings. He also said that three recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) were arrested in the gang sweep, Daily Caller reports.

“Our efforts to dismantle gangs are much more effective in areas where partnership with local law enforcement is strongest,” Homan said.
