The gunman who took a woman hostage and killed another man in Melbourne, Australia called a local TV news station claiming to be a member of ISIS.

9News is reporting that police are investigating possible linked to terrorism – after reports he had called a TV newsroom of Channel Seven saying: “This is for ISIS, this is for al-Qaeda.”

The attacker has been named as 29-year-old Yacqub Khayre, who was accused – but later acquitted – of plotting a suicide attack at the Holsworthy army barracks in 2009, reports the Herald Sun, citing senior law enforcement and government officials.

Reports suggest after being acquitted of the terror plot, drug-addicted Khayre was jailed for a violent burglary in which he repeatedly punched a man and his daughter when they disturbed him, The Sun reports.

Somalia-born Khayre was jailed for five years and six months in October 2013, and ordered to serve at least three years, The Age reported at the time.

Armed police shot the hostage-taker dead and rescued a woman in her 20s who was being held against her will.

They believe the call came from within the building as they could hear a woman screaming in the background.

Channel 7 reporter Paul Dowsley said police had told the network the phone number which made the call matched the gunman’s mobile number.

He told radio station 3AW the receptionist who took the phone call said the voice on the phone had “chilled her to the bone”.

The receptionist said the caller “seemed very firm and the woman in the background was clearly distressed”.

Three cops were injured during in a shoot-out with the gunman.

Two officers were injured in the hand, one in the neck. Two of them are currently hospitalized.

Residents also reported hearing an explosion but police said they were not aware of one, and this was more likely to have been gunfire.

Victoria Police said the bomb squad was on site, with robots spotted and experts shown wearing heavy protective gear.

After being called by a woman – believed to be the hostage – police arrived at the scene to find a man had been shot dead in the foyer of the Bay St apartment block.

The siege that lasted about two hours and involved heavily-armed specialist police was a “dangerous and volatile situation”.

ISIS blamed the attack on Australia’s membership in the US-led coalition against the militant group.

“The attack in Melbourne, Australia was carried out by a soldier of the Islamic State in response to the call for targeting the subjects of the coalition states,” the group’s Amaq news agency said.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the incident in Brighton, coming so soon after the attack in London, had shocked all Australians.

“This terrorist attack by a known criminal, a man who was only recently released on parole, is a shocking, cowardly crime,” he said.

“It is a terrorist attack and it underlines the need for us to be constantly vigilant, never to be deterred, always defiant, in the face of Islamist terrorism.”

“What is clear here is that we face a growing threat from Islamist terrorism in Australia in our region and around the world.”

“We will continue to defy it and we will continue to defeat it.”
