BREAKING: Troop Movements On US-Mexican Border

Over 400 Mexican troops have been sent to the US-Mexican border town of Reynosa.  Starting in 2011, Reynosa became a hotbed of murder and violence as competing street gangs tried to control the territory.

Here’s how one nearby resident described it:

I live in Nuevo Laredo and travel to Reynosa about once a month for business. Like someone else asked — why are you going there?

It’s reasonably safe but in the last 12 months I have seen armed civilians being chased by a mlitary patrol on a major thoroughfare ( Blvd. Miguel Hidalgo) on a Sunday afternoon and a cartel comando stopping traffic at 3 in the afternoon at a busy intersection– Blvd. de los Maestras y Mil Cumbres. Unless there is some compelling reason why you need to go, I would say pass on it just now.

Now, according to Breitbart and local sources, there are a number of troops being sent to take out some of these gangs:

Approximately 417 soldiers departed from the Mexican state of Chiapas on three military airplanes, Reynosa’s El Mañana reported. The soldiers are from the 15th Motorized Cavalry Regiment; their deployment comes just weeks after 500 soldiers were sent to Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas. The new deployment of soldiers occurred days after Tamaulipas’s Governor Francisco Cabeza de Vaca announced a new security strategy for Reynosa.

It sounds like the Mexican authorities are trying to make a show of force against these thugs.  Maybe the Mexicans think they can convince the Trump Administration that they are capable of cracking down on these thugs and controlling their side of the border.  I highly doubt 400 troops in one tiny town will be enough though.  What we really need to see from the Mexican government is genuine support of the wall and a willingness to work with Americans to destroy the cartels.

When Pancho Villa, a Mexican warlord, invaded the American state of Arizona, American troops were launched in what is now known as the Punitive Expedition.  Frankly, Mexico isn’t that far away from warranting a second one.
