AFGHANISTAN –  Three policemen and 40 Taliban have been killed during a clash in the Gomal district of southeastern Paktika province, an official said on Thursday.

Attaullah Fazli, the deputy governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants launched a coordinated attack on the district centre last night.

He said 40 insurgents, including some notorious commanders, were killed and many others wounded during the gunbattle. Three policemen were also killed and four others injured, including the district police chief.

A member of Wolesi Jirga (lower house), Abdul Qadeer Kharotai, said clashes between security forces and Taliban had been underway in the district for the past 18 days.

He also confirmed the Taliban’s casualties during the overnight battle, which forced many families to flee the area.

Meanwhile, Taliban confirmed the clash, with their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid saying the district was under siege and the fighters had captured check-posts near the district building.

He claimed four policemen had been killed but the fighters suffered no casualties in the overnight clash.
