This is what a Social Security scam sounds like.

The transcription of the scam is as follows: ( I literally received the call myself this morning)

“We have suspended your Social Security Number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press 1.

Thank you this call is from the department of social security administration the reason you have ______ call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your social security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press 1 thank you.

After pressing 1, you will then be told that the Social Security Office has been contacted by the Federal Marshalls as well as Drug Enforcement Agency.  They immediately ask you for your first and last name and then they need you to verify your SSN.  (NEVER GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE)

The individual went on to explain that my social security number had been used to rent a vehicle in Texas, that was seized by the DEA and U.S. Marshalls.  That over 200lbs of cocaine were seized and I was facing 80 years in prison and seizure of assets by the Social Security Department.

If you ask for their name, they will give you some generic name, this individual stated his was , “John Black” when I asked for an ID Badge, he gave that as well plus a case number.

It was clearly all a scam but I decided let’s see how in depth these thieves are!

They again asked for my SS#, too which I replied, ” Well the seriousness of these criminal charges is just so frightening, I need to the information from the DEA and U.S. Marshalls.”

He said, “Of course, let me transfer you to the DEA”.  (Yea ok, I will play along)

First think the new person stated, ” How can I help you today?”  Instead of hanging up or laughing, though I was clearly tempted at both, I explained what “”John Black” had just stated to me in regards to criminal activity, seizure of assets and facing 80 years in prison.

So the DEA agent stated his name was, “Kevin Smith” (again, another heavy middle eastern accent) and went on to explain my local sheriffs department has an warrant out for my arrest and unless I cooperate, they would show up and arrest me today.

At this point I did laugh a bit, so I asked for the local Sheriff departments phone number, case I.D. and from which courthouse the “warrant” was issued.  I stated by law, I am allowed the contact information for the DEA, U.S. Marshalls and Sheriffs department along with each officer in charge, so that I can personally contact them myself, after all these are such serious and frightening charges.

“Kevin Smith” explained there is no need for me to be “frightened” of such charges because together we can easily fix the problems, all they need is my SS# and bank account information so they can verify the fraudulent car rentals and other charges made from 3 different banks. (Of which I do not belong to any of those banks.)

At this point he got frustrated and stated, “If you do not provide the needed information, we have no choice but to send out the arrest warrant today.”

I replied, “Sounds GREAT To me! I love hearing from my buddies at the local Sheriffs department!”   *click* They hung up…

According to the FTC:

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here’s what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

These scumbags are always coming up with new ways to scam you, especially with fear tactics and you do not have to answer their questions and never give out your personal information.

If you feel worried, contact the division they say they are from, not by calling the number they used but by looking up the actual department they say they are from and speaking to an actual federal employee.

Other helpful information from the FTC:

The National Do Not Call Registry
gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls

  • You can register your home or mobile phone for free.
  • After you register, other types of organizations may still call you, such as charities, political groups, debt collectors and surveys. To learn more, read our FAQs.
  • If you received an unwanted call after your number was on the National Registry for 31 days, report it to the FTC.

This is just one of many horrific scams being used right now, as we find more or if you have been scammed, let us know!
