Now Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) has called for an immediate congressional investigation into WikiLeaks’ publication of documents detailing alleged CIA hacking operations.  I wonder if he was demanding the same investigation when Wikileaks was publishing information on former President George W. Bush? Or is this another means to undermine the American government and with it the Trump administration?

Lieu stated, “I am deeply disturbed by the allegation that the CIA lost its arsenal of hacking tools. The ramifications could be devastating.”

Currently, both the FBI and the CIA are coordinating their efforts to locate and hunt down the mysterious whistleblower inside the CIA who has already been dubbed Snowden 2.0. The probe is focused on determining how the anti-secrecy organization obtained the documents and whether they were leaked by an employee or contractor.

The criminal probe will look into how the documents came into WikiLeaks’ possession and whether they might have been leaked by an employee or contractor. WikiLeaks has confirmed that additional documents are in their possession, stating via Twitter that they have released a mere 1% of the documents in #Vault7.

WikiLeaks published nearly a gigabyte of files on its website Tuesday, including descriptions of CIA hacking capabilities and covert cyber bases in Europe. Wikileaks did redact all agent names and third parties listed by name in the documents and did not release the computer code needed to conduct cyber attacks. Officials have confirmed to

Officials have confirmed to CNN that documents released so far are genuine, which adds that one of the biggest concerns for the federal government is if WikiLeaks publishes critical computer code on how operations are conducted, as other hackers could take that code and cause havoc overseas. Of course, if the CIA had not left its code open and accessible to outside interlopers and hackers, thus making infiltration or hacking a simple endeavor  – as Edward Snowden explained.  This is not a concern.

The attacks listed in the WikiLeaks documents are overall not meant for bulk data collection and often require physical access to devices. Even if a code was released, a hacker would need to physically tamper with a smart television to infect it with the CIA’s purported malware. There has been speculation that WikiLeaks may eventually release the computer code, which could put smartphones or smart televisions at varying degrees of risk.

CIA and FBI officials are trying to downplay the types of operations described in the documents released from #Vault7 with claims that this is legal intelligence collection against overseas targets.  They also claim that the material describes programs still under development by the intelligence community.  So was MkUltra and Operation Mockingbird — that doesn’t mean they are ethical.  Just because one CAN do something, does not mean they SHOULD, especially not to their own citizenry as was released with regard to the development of viruses designed to turn Samsung Smart Televisions into household bugs where the televisions record audio and send data to covert computer servers.
