Few people of a certain age can say they haven’t seen the cartoon series of “Tom and Jerry”. They are the slapstick fun that caused kids and adults to crack up. Amazon has now labeled them for racism and even had Whoopi Goldberg do an opening explaining it.

What Amazon has done

The character that Amazon has gotten uptight over is Mammy Two Shoes. The cartoons have been around for 70 years and this is the first time that there has been a warning.

Here, via Huffington Post, is the warning.

“Tom & Jerry” shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.

Here, via Amazon, is part of the description of “Tom and Jerry – Spotlight Collection, Volume 2”.

It’s interesting to see how some of these cartoons prefigure the later work of Hanna and Barbera: the underwater antics in “The Cat and the Mermouse” anticipate Tom and Jerry’s frolic with Esther Williams in Dangerous When Wet (1953); Yakky Doodle on The Yogi Bear Show (1961) was copied from Little Quacker. In several cartoons, Mammy Two-Shoes’ voice has been redubbed, and the subtitles offer cleaned-up versions of her dialogue. In “Old Rockin’ Chair Tom,” she declares, “If you is a mouser, I is Lana Turner, which I ain’t!” The subtitles read, “If you’re a mouser…I’m Lana Turner, which I’m not.” Whoopi Goldberg discusses the use of stereotypes in the introduction, and these later reworkings falsify history. One expert’s opinion

Not everyone agrees with Amazon. Here, via BBC, is one expert’s opinion on the matter.

The warning was attacked as “empty-headed” by cultural commentator and professor of sociology, Frank Furedi, who said it was a form of a “false piousness” and a type of censorship which “seems to be sweeping cultural life”.

“We’re reading history backwards, judging people in the past by our values,” said Prof Furedi from the University of Kent.

This is one of those matters parents need to decide on their own.
