Blaze and Spitfire AMERICA’S FREEDOM FIGHTERS –

Zayat’s American Pharaoh ended a 37 year Triple Crown drought, the longest in history, with an amazing 5 1/2-length victory in the Belmont on Saturday with Victor Espinoza aboard. Affirmed was the last to win it in 1978.

History was made on this day and the emotions of racing’s most loyal fans is over the moon. There has been a lot of celebrating on social media, but one of my favorite quotes, in particular, was from a fan, “Do you know how to end a drought? It rains!” He was referring to the second leg of the triple crown when it came a downpour. American Pharaoh loved the slop and left the others behind in the Preakness. I had complete faith in the bay colt from the start, picked him three months before the Kentucky Derby. After all he hails from greatness, the great-grandson of Secretariat, also many greats like Unbridled, Storm Cat, PioneerOf The Nile, just to name a few in his rock solid pedigree.

Pharoah had so much heart in the deep mud at the Preakness, I knew Espinoza had enough horse and that’s all he needed. Whenever Materiality nosed up on his flank, Espinoza leaned forward a little and the horse walked away from the field.

One of the magnificent feats in all of sports had become so elusive that many questioned whether horses were being bred for the task and whether the format of three races in five weeks should be changed. But American Pharoah, the 14th horse since Affirmed to venture to Belmont Park in pursuit of racing immortality, showed that the massive challenge can still be met.

It takes greatness. And American Pharoah, celebrated for his too-short tail, his ultra-sensitive hearing that leads Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert to stuff his ears with cotton and his misspelled name, achieved that stature for Zayat Stables as the 12th Triple Crown champion.

“I don’t know if I will ever have another horse like that,” said Baffert, “and I’ve had some great horses.”

I am very happy for Bob Baffert, after getting so close with Silver Charm, Real Quiet and War Emblem, going back 18 years. Bob he put his finger on something real, of the seven horses challenging American Pharoah in this year’s Belmont, only one raced in the Preakness three weeks ago, meaning the other horses have had at least two extra weeks to rest, that is why the achievement is so special and the horses that win the prize are so spectacular. As much as fans everywhere wanted to see California Chrome become a Triple Crown winner in 2014, Coburn’s sour grapes spoiled it for many who would have continued to love him and his back-door rise to fame.

American Pharoah did more than just win racing’s most coveted prize, he proved that with each race, he got better. A lesser horse would not have done that. Congratulations to the Zayats, Baffert, and Victor Espinoza. Most of all, congrats to American Pharoah, the champ with the misspelled name.
