Anonymous Twitter briefly compromised by alleged “Cyber Caliphate”…

By  MIKAEL THALEN –

The Anonymous hackers who traced the alleged ISIS CENTCOM hack to Maryland had their Twitter account briefly compromised Monday evening.

“The Anon Message” Twitter account’s profile picture and background was altered at around 10:44 p.m. PST, changed to feature the same Islamic State imagery previously seen on CENTCOM’s Twitter and YouTube profiles.

“We shall strike like the thunder, all allegiance to the Islamic State!” a tweet on the account said.

Anonymous was able to reestablish control over the account in less than five minutes, reportedly discovering the exact location of the “Cyber Caliphate” hacker in the process.

Followers of the account immediately noted the group’s impressive response time, pointing out the fact that CENTCOM, a group responsible for U.S. security interests in 20 nations, took several hours to appear back online.

Account followers are now currently awaiting further information on the hack itself, including whether or not the hack was done through a botnet, a group of compromised computers controlled remotely, or if the hacker’s personal identity was revealed.

The original CENTCOM hack made headlines after the alleged ISIS supporter issued threats against a multitude of groups while linking to a page which appeared to list personal information on US military personnel.

Many questioned the timing of the high-profile incident given the fact that President Obama was delivering an address on cybersecurity at nearly the exact moment.

Multiple terrorism experts, including former FBI Supervisory Special Agent Ali H. Soufan, have noted that the hacker is not likely associated with the Islamic State, raising further questions after the hack appeared to originate from within the United States.

Regardless of the hacker’s identity, U.S. officials will undoubtedly use the case to promote increased Internet regulation as the notorious CISPA cybersecurity bill heads back to Congress.
