President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to cut federal funding to cities that shield criminal illegal immigrants from deportation, which would appear to set the two sides up for a showdown, FOX reports.

As many mayors – including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio – defend their sanctuary status, are they actually endangering those who reside in their cities legally?

“To all those who are, after Tuesday’s election, very nervous and filled with anxiety as we’ve spoken to, you are safe in Chicago, you are secure in Chicago and you are supported in Chicago,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said during a press conference. “Chicago will always be a sanctuary city.” Officials in New York, Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oakland, Providence, Santa Fe, Denver, and Washington, D.C. have also vowed the same.

Charles Krauthammer believes President-elect Donald Trump can and should refuse federal funding for sanctuary cities if they continue to harbor illegal immigrants. “I think Trump would be within his rights to withhold funds, and he should,” Krauthammer said on Fox News’ “Special Report” Wednesday.

“And the Democrats are making a big bet — and a mistaken one — if they decide that they’re going to defy the federal government and what seems to be common sense: control your borders,” Krauthammer added.

Trump previously vowed in his contract with the American voter to “cancel all federal funding to sanctuary cities.”

On “Fox &  Friends Weekend,” Democratic strategist Jennice Fuentes and Fox News contributor Rachel Campos-Duffy debated this issue.

Fuentes argued that giving undocumented immigrants the ability to step out of the shadows makes it safer for individuals and communities.

“If I witness a crime, I don’t have to be scared to come forward because I’m going to be deported simply for saying, ‘Listen, I witnessed a crime being perpetrated,'” she said.

Campos-Duffy said that Trump has been clear that he’s focused on securing the border and deporting illegal immigrants who are felons.

“He launched his campaign on this issue. He is not going to back down,” Campos-Duffy said. “He is going to withhold federal funds from those cities that are harboring illegal felons. And he’s going to go after them if they don’t cooperate.”

She said that mayors of sanctuary cities need to adjust to this “new political reality.”

Pete Hegseth pointed out that Emanuel and the other mayors fail to distinguish between law-abiding illegal immigrants and those who are dangerous felons, offering blanket sanctuary for all.

And Matt Palumbo at Allen West reports that on Tuesday, Trump’s immigration adviser, Kris Kobach explained how they would do that on Fox and Friends. “These mayors, what they aren’t saying, is they receive tons of dollars in federal grants and president-elect Trump has made clear that sanctuary cities may see some of that money dry up if they are continuing to defy federal law.” And it’s not just Trump fed up with their antics. Back in July, Obama’s Justice Department adopted new policies that would bar some sanctuary cities from receiving federal law enforcement grants.

What possible benefit could there be in these cities continuing to defy Trump? Not only do they bear the costs associated with illegal immigration, now they pay for it in the form of lost funding. If they keep this up, Trump will be their second worry. Their citizens voting against them will be the first.

I VOTED FOR DONALD TRUMP AND TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
