In Surprise, Arizona, Michael Meyer, 36, scaled an 80-foot pole late Thursday evening. The police say he spent several hours up there in which they eventually got him down, but the reasons why he was up there were heroic in my opinion. He was making a stand for veterans rights and the treatment they receive after the brave put their lives on the line for this country.

FOX 10 reports:

Sgt. Norm Owens said the man refused initial commands to come down and spent nearly five hours standing on a platform at the top of the pole. He was holding an upside-down American flag. Officers said Meyer was protesting for veterans’ rights and was concerned about the treatment of veterans.

Edwin “Alex” Cordero says he was one of the veterans Meyer was advocating for, although he says he was not aware Meyer had planned this protest. “He’s been following my situation and I guess he felt fear that I’ll go down like what happened a couple of days ago,” Cordero said. According to Cordero, Meyer threw a note to police specifically mentioning the veteran who killed himself over the weekend in the Phoenix VA Hospital parking lot. The note had Cordero’s contact information on it and read that he would only come down if Cordero’s story would be told.

Cordero, a retired Army Ranger who spent more than 23 years in the service, is fully disabled and was diagnosed with PTSD. He says ever since he retired last year his life has fallen apart and his cries for help have gone unanswered. “Every day is stressful, and every day I knock on doors for help and the only one helped me is this person,” Cordero said.

Emergency personnel continued to negotiate with the man during the afternoon. A fire truck with a tower was used to safely bring the man down from the pole shortly after 4 p.m. Meyer was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on charges of third-degree criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. What remains to be seen is whether his actions Thursday will have any impact on the cause for which he was trying to raise awareness.

In my eyes the trespassing charges and any other should be dropped on this man, it’s left to us as Americans to make a stand for all veterans who have been discarded by an ungrateful government as well as many of its citizens. PTSD is something very real and it causes many to commit suicide.
