The drama unfolded at an early-morning rollover wreck on Interstate 10 in the desert west of Phoenix, where a woman was ejected and killed, AP reports. Authorities think the man who shot the officer was driving the car that crashed.

State troopers responded to reports of shots fired along the westbound roadway of I-10 near Tonopah around 4 a.m. local time, ABC reports. One of the troopers, a 27-year veteran, came upon a car accident near milepost 89 and saw an injured woman who had been ejected from a vehicle that rolled over, according to state officials. The trooper had started blocking off lanes when he was unexpectedly attacked, officials said.

“Our trooper was ambushed and shot by a suspect in the immediate area,” the department stated in a press release. “A physical fight ensued, and as a result the suspect was shot and killed.”

The officer was putting out flares when the suspect opened fire and then physically attacked the wounded trooper, Col. Frank Milstead said. Milstead and DPS Capt. Damon Cecil said the trooper was ambushed.

The man was on top of the officer and “getting the better of him,” slamming the trooper’s head against the pavement, Milstead said. That’s when the passing driver showed up and asked whether the trooper needed help.

He said yes, and the passer-by went back to his vehicle, got his gun and told the suspect to stop the attack, Milstead said. When he didn’t, the Good Samaritan fatally shot him.

The wounded trooper, whose name has not been released, was transported to a hospital, where he is in stable condition and is awaiting surgery. The woman who was ejected from the rolled-over vehicle was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, according to Milstead.

The colonel said he hasn’t yet had the opportunity to speak to the passer-by but wanted to tell the man “thank you.”

“Because I don’t know if my trooper would be alive today without your assistance,” Milstead told reporters.

Officials have not yet confirmed the suspect’s identity or the deceased occupant of the vehicle, Milstead added.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Trooper and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Stay safe out there Blue.

God Bless.
