“Two students were involved in a shooting during dismissal today at Huffman High School. The school was placed on a brief lockdown, and police were called to the scene. Students have been released and police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.”

The Mayor of Birmingham was at the scene.

A school employee was also injured, reported, but it’s unclear to what extent.

“I’m saddened to learn of the death of the Huffman student. I’m praying for the family of this young lady who tragically lost her life way too early. Every life is precious and even though this was an accident it reaffirms there’s no place for students to have firearms on campus.”

In a statement, Birmingham City Schools confirmed that “two students were involved in a shooting during dismissal.” The high school was placed on lockdown and police were called.

“Students have been released and police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” the statement read.

Birmingham Police told Fox 5 Atlanta the incident happened just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, and the gun believed to have been used has been recovered by law enforcement.

“This 17 y/o young woman lost her life. She was 30 days away from turning 18, had been accepted to college and wanted to study nursing. Many unanswered questions about Huffman High shooting, but remember the victim. She should be alive. My heart breaks for her family.”

“What we don’t know about shooting inside Huffman High: How did a gun get in? Why are police calling this an accident? Is there such a thing as an accidental shooting inside a school? We know the school has metal detectors and they work. But are they being used? A lot to learn.”

“New from gun found at Westlawn Middle School in Tuscaloosa on Monday. Police say a girl brought the gun to school because she was being picked on. A month ago a gun was found at Central High School in Tuscaloosa.”

So tragic.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends and everyone involved.
