The Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed and is working in conjunction with the Columbia Police Department, Tennesee Highway Patrol, and the Maury County Sheriff’s Department in responding to a hostage situation at the Community First Bank & Trust located on James Campbell Boulevard in Columbia, Tennessee.
Law enforcement officials say a man walked into this local branch of Community First Bank & Trust around 2:30 pm CST on Friday and began taking the people inside hostage. He took a total of ten people being held inside the bank by a man armed with a machete.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol, which was earlier providing assistance to the Columbia Police Department at Community First Bank & Trust, the call was dispatched as “an armed robbery hostage situation,” said Lt. Christopher Dye.
Dye said the area around the bank, located on James Campbell Boulevard, is still “an active scene,” where eight hostages remain inside with the suspect.
During the incident, two of the hostages were safely released. Around 4:10 pm CST another hostage was released. This leaves eight hostages being held by a machete-wielding madman inside this small town Southern bank. The parking lot is completely blocked off by law enforcement and first responders. Officers in SWAT gear have the building surrounded.
Witnesses nearby restaurants and businesses said a portion of South Campbell Boulevard and Keith Drive has been blocked. According to local newspaper the Columbia Daily Herald, law enforcement has requested for people to steer clear of the area. James Campbell has been blocked off in both directions in front of the bank.

We do not currently know the identity of the man that is holding the hostages, nor have the names of the hostages been released to the public at this time.
Community First Bank & Trust is a small town local bank in Middle Tennessee. Located in Columbia, about an hour south of Nashville, the bank was founded in 1998 in Maury County, Tennessee and has several branches throughout the local area including in the local Wal-mart. This robbery hits home especially as this branch is located on the same property as the bank’s corporate office.
This situation continues to unfold and develop as hostages are still being held. It is unknown what sort of negotiations are taking place currently between law enforcement and this man described as a 53-year-old white male. We will update this story as we know more.
God Bless.
