While many focus their disgust for the federal government towards the occupants housed in the IRS, DoJ, VA, and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, this latest deserter-for-Taliban trade puts the spotlight on another particular building. Writing for the American Thinker, Russ Vaughn describes “A Five-Sided Kennel of Cowardice” and his case against the senior leadership of the U.S. military.

He wonders how it is that our military leaders have “allowed this dilettante president and his inexpert staff to make one unwise military decision after another, with a compounding effect of weakening and endangering America’s forces around the world.”

Vaughn says, “if our Pentagon weren’t currently occupied by the perfumed princes of political correctness, we might be seeing some courageous generals and admirals falling on their swords and exposing this failure of leadership instead of enabling it. Those ambitious cowards should ponder the reality that neither “I was only doing my duty” nor “I was only following orders” is a viable defense.”

It was the late Army Colonel David Hackworth who bestowed the title of “perfumed princes” on senior military leaders who stood not for the men and women in uniform but rather for their own career advancement. As we live through the decimation of our armed forces it’s difficult to say Vaughn doesn’t have a point.

Vaughn believes “There is no way that the White House could have pulled off this “wag the dog” stunt without considerable acquiescence from the highest levels of our military leadership. Those perfumed princes, led by their secretary of defense, have made themselves complicit in the crime by carrying out an order that they all knew to be unlawful.”

The evidence known to the Pentagon about Sergeant Bergdahl is quite telling. They had the testimony of PFC Bergdahl’s fellow paratroopers that he was a deserter, supported by the content of e-mails sent to his parents. Does packing his clothes for their return to his parents in the days preceding his desertion not imply premeditation, rather than spontaneous disorientation or capture? And in spite of that knowledge, our vaunted military leaders went along with this administration’s foolish stunt that will now endanger yet more of our warriors by encouraging kidnapping by terrorists.

Vaughn finds particularly disheartening that not a single one of the perfumed princes had the courage or honor to resign in protest. He feels that a single, public resignation by a single honorable four-star could have stopped this executive branch arrogance in its tracks, like a kitchen light breaking up a roach-fest.

Mincing no words, Vaughn says, “One has to wonder if there’s mandatory neutering for these former dogs of war upon being assigned to lapdog duty in that five-sided kennel of cowardice.”

Strong words indeed but considering all the actions Obama has taken that affect the readiness, capability, and capacity of our military — without one single word or act of disapproval – you do have to wonder. And of course, we’ve seen many other warrior generals and leaders forced out by this president.

I cannot tell you how many times I am asked whether or not our own U.S. military would take up arms and fire upon American citizens. I know my brothers and sisters still in uniform, and my answer is no. I know the commitment they have to their oath of service to the U.S. Constitution.
