Bill Clinton, who swore up and down to the American people in 1998 that he “did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky,” may soon offer a public apology to Monica Lewinsky, the at-the-time twentysomething woman who claimed she got busy with him on several occasions in the Oval Office.

The report of the potential apology comes from Michael Sneed, the high-profile gossip columnist of the Chicago Sun-Times.

If he goes through with the act of contrition, the always-classy Clinton would say how deeply sorry he is for the psychological anguish the affair and the resulting scandal caused for Lewinsky.

According to Sneed, the motivation for the possible repentance is blatantly political. The logic is that an apology would deflect criticism directed at Hillary Rodham Clinton for her years-long role in defending her husband from charges that he is a serial sexual predator.

It’s not clear why the former president would offer up an apology now. He made no such apology before or during the 2008 presidential primaries, when then-Senator Hillary Clinton was battling President Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Bill Clinton, who will be a grandfather this fall and who is 27 years older than Lewinsky, allegedly had nine sexual encounters with the White House intern from November 1995 to March 1997.

She testified that the first one occurred on a day when the first lady was at a “meet & greet” photo session inside the White House with a bunch of Nobel Laureates and their members.

The most infamous Clinton-Lewinsky escapade involved an infamous blue dress, which Lewinsky later gave to investigators working for Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr. A later report issued by the Independent Counsel stated that DNA testing “conclusively” demonstrated that the blue dress “was stained with the President’s semen.”
