For the past year, Baltimore prosecutors have sought to hold seven police officers criminally liable for the death of Freddie Gray while in custody, and after failing to get convictions on four of the officers, they made a shocking announcement.

For the remaining three officers, the nightmare is finally over. State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby has finally accepted the fact that her political witch hunt isn’t getting anywhere because there’s no evidence the officers acted maliciously, so her office has officially dropped all charges, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Three officers have already been acquitted by a black judge, and a fourth’s trial ended with a hung jury and was declared a mistrial. Fearing that they wouldn’t be able to get a conviction on the remaining three officers, prosecutors announced in court on Wednesday that they would be dropping all charges against them.

More from the Sun:

Porter had been scheduled to be retried in September, and White had been scheduled to be tried in October.

“All of our clients are thrilled with what happened today, and we’ll be making a comment later to address the details of what happened,” said Catherine Flynn, Miller’s attorney, outside the courthouse.

Mosby is scheduled to hold a news conference at 10:30 a.m. in West Baltimore.

Gray, 25, suffered severe spinal cord injuries in the back of the van in April 2015 and died a week after his arrest. His death sparked widespread, peaceful protests against police brutality, and his funeral was followed by rioting, looting and arson.

In clearing Nero, Goodson and Rice, Williams had repeatedly said that prosecutors presented little or no evidence to support their broader theory in the case – that the officers acted unreasonably, and willfully disregarded their training and general orders, when they decided not to secure Gray in a seat belt in the back of a police transport van, and that the decision directly led to his death.

So finally, after months of hanging in the balance, these officers, who served their community proudly, can rest easy knowing they won’t be victims of a political lynching brought on by an activist prosecutor intent on getting revenge for an accidental death. These trials were a sham to begin with, and charges were only brought by Mosby in order to placate the rioters in Baltimore who destroyed the city following Gray’s death, and thankfully justice ultimately prevailed.
