In a place once considered the birthplace of the “free speech movement” the University of California at Berkeley has fallen far far far from its roots.  Yet another popular conservative author has been blocked from speaking on the UC Berkeley campus this fall. A student led effort to host popular conservative author Ben Shapiro is the latest casualty in the war on free speech.

Young America’s Foundation announced Wednesday evening that the administrators at the University have informed Berkeley College Republicans via email that they were “unable to identify an available campus venue” to host the lecture, which was scheduled to happen on September 14, 2017.

The administrators in question were identified specifically by YAF as the Dean of Students – Joseph Greenwell and Student Organization Coordinator Millicent Morris Chaney.  Both administrators claim Shapiro’s lecture was canceled “despite extensive efforts” to find a venue and schedule the conservative.

The administrators’ message to the Berkeley student group states –

“Ben Shapiro is welcome on our campus, and we are committed to supporting his, and your, rights to free speech.”

YAF is not buying it, especially in light of the rash of cancellations of conservative speakers on Berkeley’s campus.

YAF says in a statement –

Berkeley’s inability to find a lecture hall more than two months in advance is laughable,” the Foundation notes the university’s insistence that it can only host Shapiro “when events are held at a time and location that allow for the provision of any required security measures.

YAF states this is simply more of the same restrictions the university levied earlier this year against Ann Coulter.  The Foundation set to sponsor and organize that event along with the Berkeley College Republicans.  The school’s censorship and refusal to allow a free exchange of ideas has prompted both groups to sue the school for violating their First Amendment rights.

YAF states –

“An endless stream of liberal speakers continue to be granted opportunities to speak, unobstructed by time, place, or manner restrictions while conservatives are continually treated unequally, and repeatedly relegated to the margins of campus activity.”

Adding to the controversy caused by Berkley’s refusal to allow Coulter to speak, Berkeley erupted in violent protests over an event that featured Milo Yiannopoulos last February.  Students and groups such as Antifa, By Any Means Necessary, and Black Bloc rioted, started fires, smashed windows, and attacked College Republicans.  Police refused to intervene or assist in the chaos.

Shapiro and YAF have partnered many times for campus lectures and Shapiro is a widely respected voice in conservative circles. As one might expect, he is a frequent target of those fascist and communist voices that would choose to censor an alternative point of view.
