The Peoples Republic of China’s military has stepped up their military presence and begun conducting live fire exercises as well as boosting its aerial patrols of the South China Sea.

A senior Chinese government official stated, “China has a right to declare an air defense identification zone over the area if its security is threatened.”

An ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone) is legal under international law to unilaterally declare an ADIZ.   This allows China to control the airspace over the South China Sea for identification, location and control of civilian aircraft in the ADIZ.  This also would China more time to respond to any hostile aircraft that have breached their ADIZ.

Secretary of State John Kerry, stated the following after China announced their intent to an ADIZ:

“We would consider an ADIZ…over portions of the South China Sea as a provocative and destabilizing act which would automatically raise tensions and call into serious question China’s commitment to diplomatically manage the territorial disputes of the South China Sea.”

On Sunday, July 24th, in Vientiane, Laos Southeast Asia’s foreign ministers of the 10 countries Southeast Asian Nations deliberated in multiple sessions to resolve the rising Chinese military tensions over South China Sea, military growth as well as control.

All that was accomplished was rising tensions that ended in a deadlock stalemate, due to Cambodia vetoing the ASEAN votes to have China compliant with the international court ruling that took place 11 days prior.  Laos is also ally to China remained silent during the ASEAN meetings, largely due to their position as the host of the ASEAN meeting.

The United States views China’s willingness to attend the diplomatic meetings, for appearances only and that China has no intent to follow the international ruling nor stop its military growth and control over the South China Sea.

At this point it is an intense chess match with multiple countries all on the same board.  China has made it clear that they do not recognize the international ruling against them and that any attempt to enforce the ruling by any nation, would be met with extreme force.

What does it really boil down to if China enforces an ADIZ over the South China Sea?  What it truly means is another step in strong arming the other countries in the area and pushing the air patrols by the U.S. navy even further out.

China is giving the appearance that they are willing to negotiate but their actions are far different than their propaganda.   We will continue to watch Asia and the Pacific Waters closely as the tension continues to rise.
