It appears that the morgue manager at Harvard Medical School and six others were involved in a chop shop for human body parts.

The University of Arkansas is also implicated. They were “arrested and charged with stealing and selling human remains.”

It seems to be a booming business.

Body parts on black market

If you’re looking to score some “braiiiiiins” or a liver to go with your fava beans, maybe even a stillborn infant or two, these are the go-to guys for body parts.

At least, they were.

As reported by New York Post, “seven people including the morgue manager at Harvard Medical School were arrested and charged with stealing and selling human remains from mortuaries at the Ivy League school and the University of Arkansas.” They got their information from the prosecutors.

As related by U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam in a statement on Wednesday, June 14, “the arrests involved an underground network that robbed corpses — including the bodies of two stillborn infants — at Harvard Medical School’s Anatomical Gifts Program and an Arkansas mortuary and crematorium.”

These ghouls didn’t seem to have any scruples. As described in the charging documents, 55-year-old Cedric Lodge “allegedly stole the remains from the university morgue, where he worked, and sold the body parts online with the help of his wife.” That would be 63-year-old Denise.

The pair peddled everything they harvested through “associates Katrina Maclean, 44; Joshua Taylor, 46; and Matthew Lampi, 52.”

Officials note that one of Lampi’s clients, Jeremy Pauley, became sort of a partner in the body snatching business, buying and selling body parts, “with the two exchanging more than $100,000.”

It was Pauley who “eventually led detectives to Candace Chapman Scott, who is accused of stealing cadavers slated for cremation in Little Rock and selling them to Pauley in Pennsylvania.”

It was “Pauley’s human remains shopping” which led officials to another rogue morgue employee selling body parts out of Arkansas.

Bodies had been donated

Most of the bodies and their various parts which were snatched “belong to those who donated them for scientific research purposes at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences.” The prosecutor thought he had seen it all until this case came across his desk. “Some crimes defy understanding,” Karam relates.

The “underground market the defendants were accused of setting up and participating in” threw him for a loop. “The theft and trafficking of human remains strikes at the very essence of what makes us human.”

Karam is especially sympathetic to what the familes must be going through. Having parts of your loved ones hacked off and sold like hamburger on the internet can be emotionally troubling.

“It is particularly egregious that so many of the victims here volunteered to allow their remains to be used to educate medical professionals and advance the interests of science and healing.

For them and their families to be taken advantage of in the name of profit is appalling.” Each of the defendants “face conspiracy and the unlawful transportation of stolen goods charges, which carry a maximum of 15 years behind bars.”

The court documents categorized a grisly list including “two desiccated faces MacLean paid Lodge $600 for.” In 2020, “Taylor allegedly sent Denise $200 with a memo that read, ‘braiiiiiins.’”

The Boston morgue soon became a one stop shopping experience for regular customers.

“Prosecutors also claimed Lodge allowed his buyers to enter the Boston morgue to pick out what body parts they wanted, with the rogue manager then stealing the remains and shipping them through the mail.”

Harvard called Lodge’s alleged actions “an abhorrent betrayal,” when they fired him on May 6.
