Though Manning was acquitted of the most serious charge of aiding the enemy, he was still convicted in a military court martial of 20 counts, including six Espionage Act violations, theft and computer fraud.

Manning, a native of Crescent, Oklahoma, served nearly 7 years of a 35-year sentence at Fort Leavenworth. Manning did admit and acknowledge he had leaked the information to Wikileaks, but claimed that he released information he did not believe would bring harm to the United States. This may be why the charges of Aiding the Enemy were dropped.

Arrested in 2010, Manning came out as a transgender shortly after sentencing claiming he wished to be known as Chelsea. He then filed a transgender rights lawsuit and attempted suicide twice in the last year. Manning will be released from military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on May 17 and officials are saying Manning will remain on active duty following that release. Some view Manning’s actions as that of heroic due to the government actions he exposed.  Yet others view him as a traitor and the fact that he will remain an active duty soldier, albeit an unpaid soldier, but still eligible for health care and other benefits, as a slap in the face.

“Pvt. Manning is statutorily entitled to medical care while on excess leave in an active duty status, pending final appellate review,” Foster said.

President Trump blasted Obama’s decision to release Manning from prison early and also Manning for being publicly critical of the man who had granted his freedom.  Manning had written a column stating Obama had failed to live up to his promises. President Trump took to Twitter to express his outrage in the early days of his administration –

Ungrateful TRAITOR Chelsea Manning, who should never have been released from prison, is now calling President Obama a weak leader. Terrible.”
