A recent report released by the House Armed Services committee has confirmed that no orders were given to the military to intervene in the attack that happened on September 11, 2012 that killed 4 Americans.

The report finds that while no actual “stand down” orders were given, the embassy security team stationed in Tripoli were told to stay there in case other attacks happened as a part of a larger coordinated assault, leaving those in Benghazi to fend for themselves.

The Republican-led committee found that Army Lt Col S.E. Gibson, who was head of the site security team, was told by his commanding officers to stay in Tripoli lest another attack take place.

A committee aide said that “the term ‘stand down’ means different things to different people. To someone in uniform it means you are to do nothing…. That is not the direction Lt Col Gibson was given.”

“They didn’t know where the next attack was coming from,” they said, then explained that the Lt Col was given orders to wait where he was.

Gibson himself had confirmed during a hearing that no actual “stand down” order was given but that he was told to not intervene in the attack. He said “I was not ordered to stand down. I was ordered to remain in place. ‘Stand down’ means to cease all operations, cease all activities.  We continued to support the team in Tripoli. We continued to maintain visibility of the events as they unfolded.”

The aide spoke about how it was the lack of preparedness for possible attacks on the anniversary from the administration that led to Gibson being put in an “impossible situation.”

“What words were spoken and what orders were given are only relevant in this investigation because of the impossible situation that Gibson was put in,” the aide said. He added that Gibson’s mission wasn’t to respond to such a crisis and that throughout it all he was a soldier trying to defend fellow Americans.

He said that Gibson was put in the impossible situation of having to decide whether or not to stay and defend the people in Tripoli or leave them defenseless to go and assist those already under attack without full knowledge of what was going on.

“He was forced to make that choice as a consequence of the White House’s inability to prepare ahead of the crisis ahead of that anniversary,” said the aide, who then added “That is a completely unfair position to put him in, and what words were said and what orders were given are relevant only because he was put in that position to begin with.”
