Florida authorities said two Kissimmee police officers were shot and one was killed. Less than an hour later, Jacksonville authorities tweeted that two officers were shot on the west side of the city. There was no indication that the two shootings were related.

Jacksonville is about two-and-a-half hours by car from Kissimmee.

Both officers are husbands, and have children. Baxter is married to another Kissimmee police officer.

At a press briefing, Police Chief Jeff O’Dell said police Officer Matthew Baxter succumbed to his wounds, and Officer Sam Howard was in critical condition, but the “prognosis does not look good,” O’Dell said.

Initial reports said both officers had died.

The two officers were in the area of Palmway and Cypress, checking out a report of a suspicious person at approximately 9:27 p.m. Soon afterward, a 9-1-1 call came in, saying the officers had been shot, O’Dell said.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to express his condolences.

The Kissimmee Police Department said via its official Twitter site Friday night that the officers were shot in the area of Palmway and Cypress. One officer remains in grave condition, according to Kissimmee police.

Four suspects were involved in the shooting that took place in an area known for drug activity. One suspect remained at large late Friday.

Earlier, Florida Gov. Rick Scott had tweeted condolences amid initial reports that two officers were killed in Kissimmee.

Scott then tweeted about the officers shot in Jacksonville. “Just learned of two @JSOPIO in danger tonight – we stand with ALL law enforcement in Florida.”

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, one of the officers shot in that city was in critical condition and the other was in stable condition. The suspect was shot and killed by police, authorities said.
