An Army Black Hawk helicopter carrying five crew members crashed in the ocean late Tuesday two miles off the coast of Hawaii, sparking a massive response from the Coast Guard, Fox News reports.

The Coast Guard said it received a call around 10:08 p.m. from personnel at Wheeler Army Airfield saying the base lost communications with one of its UH-60 Black Hawk aircrews.

Two Black Hawk aircrews were reportedly conducting training exercises between Kaena Point and Dillingham Airfield around the time communications were lost, according to the Coast Guard.

Officials spotted a debris field around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday near Kaena Point off the island of Oahu.

Responders are searching for five missing crew members, using an HC-130 Hercules airplane, several Coast Guard boats and a shore patrol with the Honolulu Fire Department.

“We found some debris and we recovered some debris, we cannot determine where it’s from,” Honolulu Fire Battalion Chief Paul Fukuda told Hawaii News Now. “It’s so spread out and with the darkness, it’s hard to say how big the debris field was.”

It’s not clear what may have caused the crash, but the Coast Guard said the weather on scene currently has 11 mph winds and 2 foot seas.

A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules airplane and MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Barbers Point has responded, along with an Army aircrew and Coast Guard and Honolulu Fire Department boats.

“Right now we’re currently focused on the search for the missing crew members,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Tara Molle, of the U.S. Coast Guard. “These are trained aircrew, and we’re working with our partners to saturate that area.”

HFD said at least nine firefighters walked the shoreline to Kaena Point, looking for any signs of a downed helicopter.

The Army has 2,300 Black Hawk helicopters which have been used by the military since 1978. The Army uses the chopper for everything from air assault to medevac purposes to delivering emergency supplies during natural disasters.

The Black Hawk is used by 26 other countries besides the U.S., including Japan, Korea, China and the Philippines. Newer versions of the helicopter are designed to fly higher and can carry more than older versions.

The last military helicopter crash in Hawaii happened in January 2016 when 12 Marines were killed after two Super Stallion choppers went down off Haleiwa.

This is a developing story.

God Bless.
