A woman’s badly burned body was found in a car after a fiery crash on the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn, NY.  What is highly disturbing about the incident is the man she was dating and the driver of the car simply walked away from the burning vehicle, hailing a cab in the middle of the highway leaving her to die.

The woman has been identified as 25-year-old Harleen Grewel of Astoria, New York. Her body was recovered after firefighters put out the fire and she was later identified. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Grewel’s boyfriend, 23-year-old Muslim, Saeed Ahmad. The incident occurred on Friday, October 13, 2017, at about 4:00 a.m. EST. Ahmed lost control of his vehicle, a 2007 Infiniti G35 and crashed into a concrete barrier, coming to a stop facing eastbound in the westbound lanes. Horrified onlookers swerved out of the way to avoid the ball of fire as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Video footage shows 23-year-old Saeed Ahmad hailing a cab with his fully-involved burning vehicle in the background. The New York City Police Department confirms that video footage shows a man, identified as Ahmad, leaving a fully-involved, burning vehicle.  The video shows Ahmad near his burning vehicle, approaching a cab and asking if he “could get a ride” while Grewel burned to death inside his car. He was accused of weaving in and out of traffic prior to his car hitting the barrier that ended in Grewel’s untimely and gruesome demise.

Police tracked Ahmad to Maimonides Hospital where he was being treated for burns to his neck, arms, and legs. There he was arrested on charges of criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and speeding. Ahmad currently remains hospitalized for his injuries in the burn unit at Staten Island University Hospital where he was transferred. His arraignment was pending in Brooklyn Criminal Court.

Ahmad admitted to having a few drinks prior to the crash however, he was not considered legally drunk when his blood was tested at the hospital according to police. His brother Waheed, however, claimed that his sibling had tried to rescue the passenger.

Ahmad’s relatives claim he did not leave the girl despite video evidence to the contrary.  They claim instead Ahmad tried to save Grewal, but was unable to do so. His brother 21-year-old Waheed Ahmad insists his brother is a hero and tried to rescue her.

He claims that his brother lost his cell phone in the crash, and “was unable to call the ambulance”, according to the New York Post.  Waheen states his brother’s attempts to rescue Grewal is how he was burned and his brother was  “was in pain,” “and since the ambulance wasn’t coming” he asked the taxi to take him to a hospital.

He stated of the fiery accident that led to Grewal’s grisly death –

“He said the girl that was in the car was stuck in there and he tried to get her out, that’s why his arms were burned. He couldn’t…it was too late for her.
