Authorities are on high alert this New Year’s as the risk of terror attacks remains higher than ever.

Between the shooting at a church that claimed over two dozen lives and the Las Vegas massacre that killed dozens, it’s evident that there’s no longer any place that’s off-limits when it comes to attacking innocent Americans. Thankfully, law enforcement is working overtime to keep us safe during our New Year’s celebrations.

While there’s likely terror plots in the works across the country, Texas authorities appear to have been able to stop something terrible from happening later this evening after making a horrifying find on the top floor of a Houston hotel, Click2Houston reported. After responding to a call over an intoxicated man, police found a cache of weapons and ammunition that could have wreaked havoc at the hotel’s NYE festivities scheduled for later today.

A man has been arrested on multiple charges after police located a small arsenal of guns on the top floor of the Hyatt Regency on Louisiana Street downtown, Houston police said.

Police at the hotel called for backup around 1:30 a.m. Sunday after they attempted to arrest the man for being intoxicated and trespassing. When help arrived, police noticed ammunition laying around the man’s hotel room, Lt. Gordon Macintosh with Houston police said.

When the room was searched, police found an AR-15 rifle, a shotgun, a handgun, and “lots of ammunition,” Macintosh said.

Additional weapons and ammunition were found in the suspect’s truck, which was later seen being towed from the parking lot of the hotel. The truck also had “paper” license plates, according to reports.

According to Breitbart News, the hotel is a popular hotspot that people frequent every New Year’s. This year, it plans on dropping some 50,000 balloons to celebrate the start of 2018, and apparently the man arrested had the perfect vantage point to carry out an attack similar to the one in Las Vegas earlier this year.

The Hyatt Regency, located in downtown Houston, is a traditional New Year’s Eve hotspot for the Bayou City. The open-atrium hotel is staged to drop more than 5,000 ballons on partiers as the clock strikes midnight — signaling the arrival of 2018.

The open-atrium design of the hotel could allow the man a sniper-like position from the hallway of the top floor.

Police arrested the man on charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing, KHOU CBS11 reported.

While we want everyone to have a safe and happy New Year, please remember to be vigilant, and if you see something out of the ordinary, make sure you let authorities know. After all, you may just end up saving countless lives if you do.
