The first of what will likely be many protests has broken out in Iceland. As a response to the prime minister funneling away his personal fortune into tax havens while Iceland was close to bankruptcy, Iceland has taken to the streets.
Thousands of the world’s wealthiest families and public officials have been implicated in the scandal reported yesterday by The Guardian. Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, the Prime Minister of Iceland, has refused to resign despite very vocal demands from the protesters outside his seat of government.
The map below shows all the nations that have leaders and public officials accused of hiding their money with the Panamanian firm Mossack Fonseca. This is one of the biggest corruption stories in the history of mankind.
So far, these Icelandic protests have been peaceful. But, they have only just begun and it is important to note the Iceland has a history of not protesting in public except in the most extreme cases. If Icelanders are in the streets, they are probably pretty angry.
As Putin, also implicated in the scandal, scurries to correct his image with his own people, it wouldn’t be shocking to see more of these protests popping up in other countries around the world. We will continue to update you as things develop.
