BuzzFeed is weathering a firestorm of criticism for publishing a 25-page document containing unsubstantiated and salacious allegations against President-elect Donald Trump and his confidantes.  It looks like they could be facing the music in the form of legal consequences for their poor judgment.

The Fake News organization elected to publish the document with claims Russian spies had obtained personal and financial information about the President-elect.

According to the Daily Caller –

The documents were compiled by a former British intelligence officer working for a private intelligence firm in London at the behest of Trump’s political opponents. They were later shared with Democratic political operatives and members of Congress.

If the salacious allegations in the document cache prove false, an individual named in the documents may have cause to bring a libel lawsuit against BuzzFeed.

There have been rumors that President-elect Trump may bring a civil suit against the media organization, though the idea of a sitting president personally bringing forth a civil suit against a media organization seems a bit far-fetched.

There are even more rumors that Trump aides not actively involved in the presidential administration but also slandered by the story and falsely implicated could move forward with their own legal action against BuzzFeed.  Two individuals – one of which is Michael Cohen, counsel for the Trump Organization are the most likely to do so.

BSNBC….I mean MSNBC even called out BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith with “MTP Daily” host Chuck Todd telling Smith “you just published fake news.”

Smith tried to defend the indefensible in the unsubstantiated publication claiming they “would not have made the same decision in the pre-Trump era.”

Smith stated –

“…while they had reporters trying to confirm or deny specific details, the dossier was “in play,” and “having consequences for the way our elected leaders are acting. The — you do have to ask the question of, why should I suppress that? There are then good reasons, right? Once though, it emerges, as it did last night in the public conversation that there is this secret document floating around, full of dark allegations that we will not repeat to you. That I feel like in this era, you really have to share [with] your readers what that is in an appropriate context. And our original report, I mean, if you read what we wrote, it stressed that there were real solid reasons to distrust this. It noted two specific errors.”

Todd went on to ask Smith if he didn’t feel some responsibility to not spread false information. Smith responded that it was similar to the Obama birth certificate issue, stating it’s a “difficult balance that everybody in our business navigates every day.”

I guess personal responsibility isn’t something that Ben Smith feels strongly about as he continues to defend the indefensible and BuzzFeed continues to publish little better than hit pieces and lies.
