At a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia, on February 9, 1950, Senator Joe McCarthy proclaimed that he was aware of 205 card-carrying members of the Communist Party who worked for the United States Department of State. Many thought he was crazy.  We are no longer laughing.

Now the state of California has approved a measure that would no longer make it a fireable offense for state jobs to be a card-carrying member of the Communist Party.

The measure brought forth by Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) would strike language in California law dating back to 1953 warns of “the clear and present danger, which the Legislature of the State of California finds is great and imminent, that in order to advance the program, policies and objectives of the world communist movement, communist organizations in the State of California and their members will engage in concerted effort to hamper, restrict, interfere with, impede, or nullify the efforts of the State…and their members will infiltrate and seek employment by the State and its public agencies.”

Another section of the California statute states that being a member of the Communist Party is sufficient to cause for the dismissal of public employees. Bonta’s bill would eliminate the reference to communism as a means for dismissal, though it would still be a fireable offense to knowingly advocate the violent overthrow of the government.  Thought perhaps California should explicitly state just what they mean by “overthrow” as it could be argued that purposeful and blatant bankruptcy of a state (see refusal to maintain infrastructure, abuse of public trust, sanctuary policies, misappropriation of funds, train to nowhere, 49th least free state, Oroville disaster, judicial corruption, etc)

Bonta claims it is simply just an “old and archaic reference.” He said his bill was “really just a technical fix to remove that reference to a label that could be misused or abused, and frankly, has been in the past, in some of the darker chapters of our history in this country.”

Given the disaster that is California? I think that reference is anything BUT archaic and frankly, I think I would get a HEARTY AMEN from those folks in Northern California that have long been a part of the debate for the forming a separate state of Jefferson longing to free themselves from the bullying of the communist like policies of the Bay area and Sacramento.

The lone voice of reason seemed to be Assemblyman Randy Voepel (R-Santee) as he urged his colleagues to vote as resounding NO.  He argued VEHEMENTLY that generations of American military veterans have fought valiantly in wars to protect this country and its future generations against communists, yet now California is simply going to vote the ideology in without even a second though.  He believes it is a political ideology that is still very much a threat.

Voepel stated –

“The whole concept of communism and Communist Party members working for the state of California is against everything we stand for on this floor.”

Frankly, it should be against everything we stand for in this country. That it isn’t should be alarming in the extreme!

Assembly Bill 22 passed with a 41-vote majority. Bonta emphasized that at the end of the date that harmony was more important.  The bill now moves to the California Senate.
