ORIGINAL RELEASE: The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a homicide investigation in Tampa.

On Friday, June 2, 2023, deputies responded to the report of a shooting in the 12100 block of Nebraska Avenue just after 7 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they located a victim with multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased.

“Our dedicated team of detectives is working tirelessly to investigate every lead to solve this senseless act of violence,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

“If anyone has information regarding this shooting, please contact us immediately. Any detail could be helpful.”

At this time, this is an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public.

UPDATE: June 3, 2023: The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has identified a suspect in connection to a homicide investigation in Tampa.

Through investigative means, detectives determined that Joel Elkanah Jr., 25, is a suspect in this investigation.

Elkanah currently has an active warrant for 1st Degree Murder with a Firearm.

“As our investigation continues, I urge anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward immediately,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

“While we believe this to be an isolated incident at this time, Elkanah Jr. is considered armed and dangerous, and we are dedicated to ensuring he is arrested for his crime.”

Anyone who comes in contact with him is urged to use caution and call 911.

This is an active investigation, any updates will be released from the HCSO Public Affairs Office.
