Comey Never Kept Detailed Memos on His Conversations With Obama Like He Did With Trump

Ousted and disgraced former FBI Director James Comey is testifying before Congress on Thursday and made a very surprising statement in his prepared opening statement released late on Wednesday.  Comey states that he did not keep detailed memos on his conversations with Obama.  Yet he chose to do so with President Donald Trump.

According to the president of the National Association of Secretaries of State, neither Obama nor any of the members of his cabinet felt that the Russian effort to hack or interfere with America’s electoral systems was worth mentioning.

And according to Connecticut’s Secretary of State and the top official of the National Association of the Secretaries of State, Denise Merrill states they did ask for details.

Merrill states –

“And over-and-over again, they did say there was no credible threat that they had found. And they said that right through the election, and the next administration reiterated that. Over and over again when we asked, we were told there was no actual threat that they knew of.”

Merrill was also asked if there were any private briefings regarding state election officials on possible Russian interference prior to election day in November 2016.

Merrill states –

“No. We were not briefed on any of that. We were not told in advance.”

According to Comey, during the entire eight years of Obama’s presidency, Comey only spoke with him twice.  However, Comey spoke with President Trump no less than nine separate times within the first four months of Trump’s inauguration in January 2017.

Why did Comey feel that he must extensively document his conversations with President Trump?

Comey stated in his prepared remarks –

I felt compelled to document my first conversation with the President-Elect in a memo to ensure accuracy, I began to type it on a laptop in an FBI vehicle outside Trump Tower the moment I walked out of the meeting. Creating written records immediately after one-on-one conversations with Mr. Trump was my practice from that point forward.

This had not been my practice in the past. I spoke alone with President Obama twice in person (and never on the phone) — once in 2015 to discuss law enforcement policy issues and a second time, briefly, for him to say goodbye in late 2016. In neither of those circumstances did I memorialize the discussions. I can recall nine one-on-one conversations with President Trump in four months — three in person and six on the phone.

I immediately prepared an unclassified memo of the conversation about Flynn and discussed the matter with FBI senior leadership.”
