According to The Hill – Rep. John Fleming (R-LA), filed a privileged resolution on Thursday morning to impeach IRS Commissioner John Koskinen for lying to Congress under oath and failed to comply with a lawful subpoena. They are flexing muscle to make this happen to overcome the resistance being given by House Speaker Paul Ryan and other senior establishment Republicans. This is prompting House conservatives to push and force a vote. The resolution almost guarantees a vote in September.

House rules dictate that “privileged” measures MUST be acted upon within two legislative days.  This means it will be heard in September, likely after Labor Day, once Congress goes back into session. The House adjourned for a seven-week recess as of Thursday afternoon.

According to PJ Media

Any pro forma sessions, during which no legislative business is conducted, that are held over the recess will constitute legislative days that count toward the resolution’s expiration. Consequently, the motion could expire as soon as next week while the House is out of session. That means the Freedom Caucus would have to give re-notice of the resolution at a later date so a vote could still occur in September.

“[The Freedom Caucus] is committed to have this fully addressed and a vote taken that reflects the voice of millions of Americans. It is our hope that a prudent schedule to fully address this issue will be set forth by our leadership,” Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) told The Hill.

Speaker Ryan has repeatedly resisted the calls from conservative voices for the initiation of impeachment proceedings.  Ryan and other establishment Republicans worry that such a vote for impeachment of an administration official would set a “bad precedent”.  Nevermind the “bad precedent” that it sets to allow such an official to remain in office after lying under oath,  refusing to cooperate with a lawful subpoena and the rule of law in the United States — it seems to me that is a much more dangerous precedent to allow to stand.

It seems the only “bad precedent” the powers that be are concerned with is one that affects their power structure. Ryan and his cronies fear that while Republicans would have no trouble establish Koskinen is guilty of the “high crimes and misdemeanors” that he has been accused, if Democrats had the majority, the precedent would be used to punish Republican officials they have policy differences with.

Funny, but does that sound ANYTHING like a government that is “for the people, by the people” to you?

Ryan has promised that Republicans will settle on a strategy aimed at resolving this issue once the summer recess is over.

“Some of these members have focused on it quite a bit, that’s why they’re bringing attention to the issue. When we return from our work period, we’ll talk about it as a family,” states Ryan.
