A police officer fought back today against the thug that shot him with a unique and rather hilarious message. Kevin Rojas was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for shooting at a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer during a 2016 gun battle.

In March 2016, the officer was off-duty and taking his 14-year-old son to school in an unmarked car when he noticed 19-year-old Rojas driving erratically. Though he was not on duty, the officer tried to pull Rojas over. When the officer took his eyes off Rojas momentarily, the 19-year-old began shooting through the windshield of the officer’s car. Three bullets hit the officer, including in the face. His son was not struck.

Despite being shot, the detective got out of his vehicle and returned fire before Rojas ran off. Onlookers ran over to help the detective until rescue workers arrived with medical assistance.

Rojas then stole a truck racing back to his own neighborhood. He then barricaded himself inside his home after crashing the stolen truck at a neighbor’s house. Rojas was shot after police officers said they saw him through the sliding glass door pointing a gun at them and refused orders to drop it.  He was shot in the torso, leg, and hand.

The now 21-year-old Rojas has been sentenced to life in prison for attempt to kill the officer and his son. According to police, Rojas had been running away from a fight with his live-in girlfriend when the off-duty officer had tried to make the 2016 traffic stop. Investigators learned he had just been involved in an argument with his live-in girlfriend prior to the police shootout and had threatened to harm himself.

 

 

The officer is not identified by name as he continues to work uncover.  During the trial, the officer described the near-death encounter in detail –

“I go to pick up my radio to call in the traffic stop, but that’s when I noticed the car door opening. When I see the car door opening, I start to look behind me to go open my door. That’s when I hear the gunshots, and the glass shattering. … When he shoots me in the head, I get a whiplash back. I see the blood splatter. At this time, I know — I realize I got shot.

It only took for me to look away for one second, and he was already on top of me trying to kill me.” 

He also had a few words for Rojas at his sentencing hearing, calling him a coward –

“I will take those bullets instead of a fellow officer or innocent bystander. When I brought the fight back, you ran like a coward. I brought a little gift for you. You will need it where you are going.”

 

The officer then pulled out a bottle of the personal lubricant K-Y Jelly. It will be 25 years before Rojas can be considered for parole. The judge handed down the maximum prison sentence for each of the crimes Rojas was convicted of. Rojas declined to speak or have a witness speak before being sentenced. Presiding Judge James Daniel stated –

 

 

“I’m pretty sure Mr. Rojas doesn’t understand what the rest of his life means.”

The jury took less than an hour and a half to reach a guilty verdict on all counts for Rojas.
