Mosul, IRAQ –The bodies of 54 people executed by Islamic State militants and killed in battles between the group and Iraqi forces were discovered on Wednesday in Mosul and Anbar, according to top security and paramilitary sources.

Shafaq News quoted a source at the Civil Defense service saying that 14 dead bodies of people apparently killed in encounters between ISIS and security troops were found under the rubbles in Mahallat al-Maydan and Qleyat districts in the Old City, Mosul.

In Hit, west of Anbar, Qatari al-Obaidi, a senior commander at Anbar’s mobilization forces, told IkhNews that the bodies of 40 people executed  by ISIS were found inside a mass grave in the city of Hit, west of Ramadi, Iraqi News reports.

He said the corpses, found during a security search at al-Gamiya neighborhood, belonged to civilians from Albu Nemr, a local clan.

As Iraqi troops recaptured areas held by Islamic State militants since October 2016, they have regularly run into mass graves of civilians and security agents executed by militants for fleeing the group’s havens or collaborating with security forces.

America’s Freedom Fighters reported earlier that Iraqi army fighter jets killed 27 Islamic State members in an air raid carried out on Wednesday, a senior paramilitary commander was quoted saying.

Qatari al-Samarmad, a commander at Anbar’s mobilization forces, was quoted by IkhNews saying that army warplanes pounded an Islamic State hideout in Wadi Hawran, west of the province, killing 27 militants, including foreign nationals.

He said a number of vehicles and a restroom belonging to the militants were also destroyed in the raid, Iraqi News reported.

Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in Iraq earlier this month with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.

Qatari al-Samarmad, a commander at Anbar’s mobilization forces, was quoted by IkhNews saying that army warplanes pounded an Islamic State hideout in Wadi Hawran, west of the province, killing 27 militants, including foreign nationals.

Speaking during a weekly press briefing at the cabinet’s building in Baghdad on Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi pointed that security forces had cleared “14,000 square kilometers” of al-Jazirah, a desert region surrounded by Anbar, Salahuddin and Nineveh provinces, from Islamic State vestiges.

“At a military level, Islamic State in Iraq is over,” Abadi declared. He had said that final victory over ISIS would be proclaimed after al-Jazirah is totally cleared.

ISIS declared a self-styled “caliphate” in a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014. A government campaign, backed by the coalition, launched in 2016 to retake ISIS-held regions, managing to retake all havens, most notably the city of Mosul, the group’s previously proclaimed capital.

Iraq’s war against the Islamic State displaced at least five million civilians and left thousands dead. The United Nations accuses ISIS of committing deeds that mount to war crimes.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has recently declared “military victory” over IS as all of the group’s bastions were recaptured by November 17th.
