The couple ran out to their yard and found Officer Ronald Tarentino lying on the ground with a gunshot to his lower back. They grabbed some towels as more officers began to arrive at the scene. “My husband held his head up, and the towel, and rolled him with the other officer to check the wound,” Mrs. Lemieux told CBS Boston.

“I held him, I tried to keep him calm,” Mrs. Lemieux said, fighting back her tears. Lemieux never met Officer Tarentino. She asked police to place an angel figurine near the spot that she clutched his hand.

“I hope he rests in peace knowing he wasn’t alone, that me and my husband were with him, and I want him to be at peace and his family to be at peace knowing he wasn’t alone,” Mrs. Lemieux said.

Tarentino was shot in the back by a coward named Jorge Zambrano during a traffic stop. Zambrano was later killed in a shootout with state police.

Auburn Police Chief Andrew Sluckis said Officer Tarentino was a humble man who had a “larger than life personality that always brightened our days and nights.”

“Sadly his life was taken from us by a feckless coward with a gun. I pray that something positive will come from this tragedy. I think if Ron were here today he would say ‘Do not allow my death to stand for nothing. Come together. Work together. Support one another and fix what is broken,’” Chief Sluckis said.

Tarentino is survived by his wife and 3 children.
