Syed Omar Bajawari, one of the most senior ISIS terrorist group leaders has been killed in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, local media reported Wednesday, citing the Defense Ministry.

Bajawari was killed along with at least 47 ISIS militants during the counterterrorism operation in Achin district of the province, the Khaama news agency reported.

A media release from the 201st Selab Military Corps in eastern zone of the country, said Afghan commando forces carried out the air and ground strikes against militants in Achin district.

Forty-seven Daesh militants, including four notorious commanders had been killed in the offensive, the statement said.

Shadall, Abdulkhel, Janjal Shegi, Bezodat and Kandar villages had been cleared of Daesh presence in Achin districts during the operation. Security forces recovered a rocket and two Kalashnikovs during the offensive.

The statement did not provided details about security forces and civilian casualties.

ISIS has not commented about the defeat.

Afghanistan has been facing instability for many years with the government troops fighting against the Islamist terror organization Taliban, also outlawed in Russia, that seeks to establish a strict Sharia law in the country.

The turmoil has resulted in the rise of other terrorist groups such as Daesh (ISIS).
