A top Democrat from Florida was just given a lengthy prison term after being convicted of the most despicable charges you could imagine.

Former Rep. Corrine Brown has stood trial for mail, wire, and tax fraud following her illicit actions involving a children’s charity, Fox News reported. Brown, who served in Congress for nearly 25 years, had stolen money from the sham charity One Door for Education, which allegedly gave scholarships to poor children but instead was used as Brown’s personal piggy bank.

Federal prosecutors said she and a top aide commited fraud by using donations for lavish parties and trips.

The aide and another official later accepted a plea deal and testified against Brown, who served in Congress for nearly 25 years.

She was defeated in her 2016 primary race.

Earlier this year, One Door President Carla Wiley pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud after it was determined that she had deposited $800,000 into the foundation’s account over four years. Over that time, federal prosecutors say it gave one scholarship for $1,000 and that Wiley transferred herself tens of thousands of dollars.

Brown’s former chief of staff, Elias “Ronnie” Simmons, and the charity’s president pleaded guilty after their federal indictments for misusing the charity’s funds, and testified against Brown.

Brown testified that she was left in the dark about the goings-on with One Door’s money, and blamed the theft on Simmons.

However, the jury didn’t buy her shoddy defense, and on May 18, she was convicted of 22 charges related to her deplorable actions.

During Monday’s hearing, Brown’s attorney had argued for probation, but their appeal didn’t help Brown’s case at all.

According to News 4 Jax, U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Corrigan called the verdict a “sad day” for everyone while reading the 12-term Democrat’s sentence.

“This is a sad day for the community, and I was impressed by all the outpouring of support for you,” Corrigan said, referring to about 100 letters he said he received before the sentencing hearing. “That’s a testament to what you did. That’s what makes it all the more tragic and more sad. All I can do is to wish you well and your family well.”

Naturally, Brown’s attorney said they’re going to appeal the ruling.

“She hasn’t given up hope. She intends to continue to fight,” Smith said outside the federal courthouse. “This court does not have the last word considering the congresswoman’s fate.”

However, it will likely be of little avail considering the charges she was convicted of.
