DO COPS NEED BODY CAMERAS?

One of the top demands from the national demonstrators protesting the recent police killings is equipping all officers with dark cams, body cams, and other recording devices. They think it should make it easier discovering the truth in situations where police have to use force.

People wanting to see what happens for themselves is understandable.

The idea is gaining momentum. Obama announced a $263 million package to help police departments buy and use 50,000 cameras. The nation’s largest police department in New York city has started a pilot program.

Statistics show that fewer than 20% of police calls involve felony crimes and only 1% of those calls result in the use of physical force.

One of the problems that maybe a concern is the important issue of whether or not officers are turning off their cameras at crucial moments. For instance, a police officer in New Orleans earlier this year, shot Armand Bennett in the forehead during a traffic stop. The officers failed to report it had happened. As the press dug into the story, it turned out the officer who shot him had his camera turned off.

Evidence suggests that the presence of cameras does not necessarily make police officers more courteous or careful. But a study shows police in Rialto, California, showed using cams led to a 60% drop in use of force and a 88% decline in citizen complaints in a single year.

The usage of cameras will protect the officers as well as the citizens and gives the public a sense of security, especially with everything that has happened. Also protects the officers against unjust accusations. Of course there will be pros and cons, but I think the presence of cameras will improve cop and citizen relationships.

As the nation gets ready for the 50,000 body cams to hit the street, we will face the same question: Are the police keeping us safe and respecting our civil liberties? Maybe with more cameras being used, that will be a question we will have an answer for.
