You gotta love what Obama, Eric Holder, and the Department of Justice put their efforts into. America’s top police agency sued the Philadelphia School District on behalf of a Muslim employee whose long beard violated the appearance code. That suit was settled today and bearded Muslims everywhere can rejoice.

Siddiq Abu-Bakr is a Muslim who claims he wears a long beard for religious reasons. He has been an employee of the school district since 1987. In 2010 the district adopted a neat appearance policy, which said that beards must be trimmed to a quarter of an inch in length. Abu-Bakr refused to do this because he says Islam forbids it.

Abu-Bakr was threatened with disciplinary action, though there is no evidence that any ever took place. He wasn’t fired or even reprimanded, but he sued the school district anyways. In fact, the district settled an unspecified monetary claim with Abu-Bakr but that still wasn’t good enough so with the help of the DoJ, he got them to change the rules as well.

As part of the settlement The Philadelphia School District gets to keep their appearance code but must make an exemption for Muslim men. Every other employee has to maintain a neat professional appearance, but Muslims get to look like Osama bin Laden because they are special.
