Police have identified the officer as 26-year-old Darryl Cathey, a six-year-veteran of the force.
Just after midnight Saturday, police say a 12th district officer approached Cathey’s marked police vehicle on the 6500 block of Woodland Avenue. The officer noticed Cathey’s vehicle had three flat tires and bent rims.
Police say a 12th District Sergeant then arrived on scene to observe the damage, and took the Officer Cathey into custody, after smelling alcohol on his breath, and talking with the officer. During their conversation Cathey indicated that he was unaware that he had been operating the vehicle while it had damaged tires.
A struggle ensued between Officer Cathey, a supervisor, and other officers while the he was being taken into custody.
The accident investigation division and internal affairs are investigating the incident.
