This is an extremely disturbing report about an inmate at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia who was allegedly eaten alive by bugs in his cell last year.
Authorities have released the results of the autopsy and have concluded that the inmate, Lashawn Thompson’s cause of death resulted as complications due to severe neglect and major contributing causes as untreated schizophrenia, dehydration, malnourishment and severe body insect infestation.
How terrifying.
Forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell has concluded that Thompson’s manner of death was homicide.
From FOX News:
“These autopsy findings confirm that Lashawn was killed by the extreme neglect of the Fulton County Jail and its staff,” Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney representing Thompson’s family in a lawsuit against the jail, said in a Monday statement ahead of a press conference.
“He was dehydrated, malnourished, and his body was infested inside and out with insects — it is truly one of the most horrific cases we have seen.”
Thompson was allegedly eaten alive by bugs in his Atlanta jail cell while awaiting trial for a June 2022 misdemeanor simple battery charge, according to his family’s attorney.

Jail officials placed Thompson in the psychiatric wing after determining he had schizophrenia.
Three months after his placement in the psychiatric wing, jail officials discovered Thompson rotting away, eaten by bugs, in a filthy jail cell.
Public records obtained by attorney Michael Harper of the Harper Law Firm, who is representing Thompson’s family apparently show that detention officers and medical staff at the jail noticed Thompson’s deterioration — including an infection from bedbugs and lice on his torso — while he was still alive but did nothing to aid him.
“They literally watched his health decline until he died. When his body was found one of the detention officers refused to administer CPR because in her words she ‘freaked out,'” Harper wrote in the press release.
“It’s no secret that the dilapidated and rapidly eroding conditions of the current facility make it incredibly difficult to meet the goal of providing a safe, clean, well-maintained and healthy environment for all inmates and staff,” Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat said in a statement at the time. “Without making explicit statements about Mr. Thompson’s health, it’s fair to say that this is one of many cases that illustrate the desperate need for expanded and better mental health services.”
The Atlanta Police Department and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are conducting investigations into the jail and Thompson’s death.
In the same week another inmate, 29-year-old Joshua McLemore was found dead in his cell at Jackson County Jail in Indiana after reportedly suffering from malnutrition and dehydration while in solitary confinement at the facility.
Newly released surveillance footage — filed as part of a Federal civil rights lawsuit against Jackson County — revealed that Mr. McLemore was left naked and starving in solitary confinement for nearly three weeks with no medical attention, which reports said led to multiple organ failure and his death.
Sheriff Pat Labat has been pushing for a new detention facility due to overcrowding that researchers estimate could cost up to $2 billion, according to 11 Alive News.
“Today we have almost 600 people sleeping on the floors and the jail is being held together with duct tape and bubble gum,” Labat said in February, according to 11 Alive. “When you have people that are ingenious enough to start stripping the wires from some outlets and start using the materials there to build and make homemade knives — we have to create a better environment.”
U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, Chairman of the Senate Human Rights Subcommittee, is continuing his oversight of conditions of incarceration in Georgia and nationwide.
Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Georgia, called on the U.S. Department of Justice on April 20 to launch an investigation into Thompson’s death.
In his latest effort to protect incarcerated people from human rights abuses, Human Rights Subcommittee Chairman Ossoff launched an inquiry to strengthen oversight of jails and prisons where brutal treatment and other human rights abuses have been reported.
