President Obama answered questions at a press conference with Estonian President Ilves. Obama was asked questions about ISIS by the press. His remarks sounded tough, but it is his ultimate goal that has people questioning him. He wants to make ISIS become manageable. That has ABC News and Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) ask questions.

Statement from Obama

Here, via the White House website, is what Obama said.

And to go back to what I said earlier to Ann, we know that if we are joined by the international community, we can continue to shrink ISIL’s sphere of influence, its effectiveness, its financing, its military capabilities to the point where it is a manageable problem.  And the question is going to be making sure we’ve got the right strategy, but also making sure that we’ve got the international will to do it.  This is something that is a continuation of a problem we’ve seen certainly since 9/11, but before.  And it continues to metastasize in different ways.

Statement from Senator Blunt

Here, via his press release, is what Senator Blunt had to say about the comment.

“As we were reminded this week, ISIS is clearly prepared to perpetrate contemptible boundaries that are unacceptable to Americans – and hopefully all civilized worlds. Terrorists who behead Americans are not ‘manageable.’ They must be stopped, and we need President Obama to communicate a clear strategy and goals on how he plans to eliminate this threat.”

ABC commentary

ABC news has come out with commentary on the answer that is anything but their normal cheerleading. Here, via the ABC news site, is the analysis from Jonathan Karl.

President Obama has condemned the beheading of U.S. journalist Steven Sotloff, saying “we will not be intimidated … justice will be done.”

But he offered a mixed message today about what exactly the United States wants to do about ISIS.

At first, the president offered what seemed to be an unambiguous goal.  “The bottom line is this:  Our objective is clear and that is to degrade and destroy ISIL so it is no longer a threat,” he said.

That would be an expansion of what the president and top White House officials have said previously.  They have steadfastly avoided saying the goal of U.S. policy is the destruction of ISIS, instead citing more modest objectives:  protecting Americans, protecting Iraqi infrastructure, stopping a humanitarian disaster, etc.

But when ABC News Radio White House correspondent Ann Compton today asked the president to clarify whether the United States now wants ISIS destroyed, the president seemed to significantly backtrack.

“Our objective is to make sure they aren’t an ongoing threat to the region,” he said.

Then, in response to another question, he seemed to backtrack even further:  “We know that if we are joined by the international community, we can continue to shrink ISIL’s sphere of influence, its effectiveness, its military capability to the point where it is a manageable problem.”

Making ISIS a “manageable problem” sounds like a far cry from destroying it.

The President wants to talk tough, but does not want to do what is needed to truly deal with terrorists. When even his normal cheerleaders are speaking out, this means the man has lost the veil of protection for his incompetence.
