EVEN DEMOCRATS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE EPA

Representative Ron Barber (D-AZ) is considered one of the most independent members of Congress, as proven by The Sunlight Foundation. The EPA has gone after the Arizona Electric Power Cooperative with rules that would affect hundreds of thousands of Arizonans. Barber has been working to stop new emission guidelines that would cost millions to a plant that employs 242 people. A letter he sent to the EPA was a bipartisan effort he put together.

Statement to the EPA

Here, via Barber’s website, is part of the statement to the EPA.

Arizona has the opportunity to lead the nation in clean energy. We have 8,558 solar jobs, and we are the second-largest state for solar jobs in the country.

I am concerned that Arizona has been targeted for a 50 percent cut in emissions, particularly compared with high emission carbon states like Kentucky that are seeing no cuts or even a slight increase in allowable emissions. I will push back on the EPA to make sure all states are doing their part and Arizona gets a fair shake. I also will continue to help move our state forward and work to make southern Arizona the nation’s leader in clean energy jobs.

Press release from Barber

Here is part of the recent press release, also on Barber’s website.

Since he took office more than two years ago, Barber has worked closely with AEPCO officials to ensure that its Apache Generating Station in Cochise County remains in operation while reducing emissions.

Because of Barber’s work, 242 jobs at the power plant have been saved and Cochise County customers of the utility have been spared from massive increases in their bills.

But now there is a new threat: the EPA’s proposed greenhouse gas reduction rule known as the Clean Power Plan proposal.

“As written, the current proposal will have a significant impact on the state of Arizona’s rural electric cooperatives, including Arizona Electric Power Cooperative Inc. (AEPCO),” Barber and his colleagues wrote. “We urge you to work with AEPCO to mitigate these impacts before the rule is finalized.”

The letter to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy was signed by Barber as well as Democratic Reps. Ann Kirkpatrick, Ed Pastor and Kyrsten Sinema and Republican Reps. Trent Franks, Paul Gosar, Matt Salmon and David Schweikert, all from Arizona.

The thin veil of Democrat solidarity is collapsing under the loss of jobs and destruction of the economy.
