Lithuania front a powder keg, Russia has ability to launch Baltic attack in 24 hours…

With North Korea tensions coming to a boiling point with the U.S. and the conflict in Syria, the media has forgotten about the powder keg in Lithuania.

The Lithuanian intelligence service said in its annual threat assessment that Russia has upgraded its military in the Kaliningrad region.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet (BSF) that is based in Crimea has been reinforced with a squadron of eight newest Sukhoi Su-30SM fighters.

The multi-role Su-30SM can be deployed in counter-air strikes, counter-land and counter-sea missions. It can conduct electronic counter-countermeasures and early warning tasks. The aircraft also acts as a command-and-control platform within a fleet of combat aircraft performing joint missions.

Admiral Vitko said that in the past year the Fleet’s pilots had flown hundreds of sorties clocking 5,000 hours in the air which he described as the best such performance in a decade.

“Our pilots have flown over 200 antisubmarine missions, launched hundreds of unguided missiles and performed numerous bombing missions. Our helicopters have flown over a hundred sorties taking off from and landing on ships,” he added.

The Su-30SM is a multirole fighter for all-weather, air-to-air and air-to-surface deep interdiction missions.

“This is a signal to NATO to improve its decision speed,” Lithuanian Defense Minister Raimundas Karoblis told reporters on the sidelines of the presentation of the report. “NATO’s reaction time is not as fast as we would like it to be.”

Russia has developed the capability to launch an attack on the Baltic states with as little as 24 hours’ notice, limiting NATO’s options to respond other than to have military forces already deployed in the region, Lithuania’s intelligence service said on Monday.

“Provocations against NATO units in Lithuania will continue and will get bigger,” Remigijus Baltrenas, head of Lithuanian military counterintelligence, told reporters.

The United States has accelerated the deployment of troops to Poland, the Baltic states and Romania as part of raising security in the region, officials said.

This year NATO is deploying a force of about 1,000 soldiers in each of the Baltic states and Poland, in addition to smaller contingents of U.S. troops already in the region.

The alliance and the US insist the troop presence is not aimed against anyone, but Russia has threatened measures in response.

“We must clearly grasp what is happening around our borders, why NATO is building up arms and infrastructure. It deploys four additional battalions to alliance member states in Eastern Europe. Why are they doing it?” asked Nikolay Bordyuzha, secretary-general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) – a Russian-led military bloc that includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

“We cannot remain silent and do nothing, looking at how countries around us are being crammed with weapons, and troops being moved,” he told the Russian newspaper Izvestia.

By no means are we saying war or the sky is falling, this is a situation that must be watched and reported.  We will continue to monitor the situation and release intel as we research it.
