Sassy Liberty AMERICA’S FREEDOM FIGHTERS –

An online petition on change.org is gaining traction with over 61,000 signatures to remove the Ray Lewis statue from in front of the Ravens stadium – M & T Bank Stadium. This backlash comes in the wake of Lewis and his decision to kneel during the national anthem following a trend of #TakeTheKnee.

It seems to be the trendy thing to do – some claim to be taking the knee in opposition to President Trump, some proclaim it is against racism, others proclaim it is against police brutality.  Whatever the reason? It has unleashed a firestorm of controversy.

Lewis retired from the NFL after finishing out the 2012 season came out alongside the current lineup of Baltimore Ravens and knelt on both knees just prior to the scheduled game between the Ravens and the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

However, Lewis claims he was simply praying. Lewis stated on Showtime’s Inside the NFL –

“I dropped on two knees — both knees — so I can simply honor God in the midst of chaos.”

It seems fans or former fans rather are not buying it.  Eric Moniodis started the petition entitled – “Baltimore Ravens: Remove the Ray Lewis statue in front of Ravens stadium.

The Lewis statue — depicts the dance the player made famous as he entered the field — was unveiled in 2014.

The petition reads –

“I want the Ray Lewis statue at Ravens Stadium removed because of his refusal to stand during the National Anthem. That song honors our country and our veterans who fought for it. To kneel during it is disrespectful, regardless of what you are protesting. I will not stand for that kind of disrespect towards our country, especially from a legend such as Ray Lewis. You stand for the National Anthem as a salute to those who can’t stand because they fought for this land.”

Many Americans view Lewis’ actions as a slap in the face – blatant disregard and disrespect for the life of privilege that Lewis has been afforded making multiple millions a year while playing a game for a living.  A life where rather than choose to act – to invest his time and money into effectuating change, he simply takes a knee in disrespect for the millions of Americans who when a loved one served in the military and made the ultimate sacrifice in action?  That flag was the only thing returned to them of the person they loved.

It seems that anger and outrage towards Lewis’ actions have reached such a level that extra security has been required for the statue.  The Baltimore Ravens apparently felt that because of recent statue protests and vandalism, extra security around the statue for the upcoming game against the Pittsburg Steelers was warranted.

According to the Authority’s spokesperson, Rachelina Bonacci –

“There is additional security at the statue plaza at this time. Certainly, observers can notice the presence of uniformed security officers at M&T Bank Stadium, which includes the statue plaza. The additional officers and other security enhancements have been in place since Sunday afternoon.”

The Authority is the property management company that manages M & T Bank Stadium.  The Ravens themselves have declined to comment on the petition.  It also does not look like any NFL players will be disciplined for their protests either.

Those that continue to defend this issue as some level of First Amendment exercise should know that most First Amendment experts say most employees can be fired from many jobs for exercising their freedom of speech. Federal laws do not protect workers in the private sector – only government employees as evidenced by Google’s recent ouster of James Damore, for circulating a memo regarding the differences between men and women.

Senior adviser for Workplace Fairness, Paula Brantner –

“There is no federal law protecting against discrimination or retaliation for political activity at private companies. A lot of people think they have First Amendment rights, but those only apply to government employees.”
