Beginning on Wednesday the House Oversight Committee will be putting former Attorney General Eric Holder and company in the hot seat.  Outgoing committee chairman Jason Chaffetz will hold a hearing to reopen the examination into the Fast and Furious debacle.  The intent of the hearing is to look at the case with fresh eyes.  Those presiding over the hearing plan to “identify what the new officials at the Department of Justice can learn from the mistakes made by their predecessors in responding to Congress’s inquiry” and “to understand the effect of the Justice Department’s obstruction on these witnesses.”

Operation Fast and Furious was a program implemented by the Obama Justice Department and headed up by then-Attorney General Eric Holder and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms between September 2009 and December 2010. ATF agents deliberately and purposefully under the direction of the DOJ allowed Mexican cartels to openly traffic thousands of rifles south of the border to Mexico from American gun shops. “Gunwalking”, or “letting guns walk”, was a tactic of the Arizona Field Office of the ATF, which ran a series of sting operations between 2006 and 2011 in the Tucson and Phoenix area where the ATF “purposely allowed licensed firearms dealers to sell weapons to illegal straw buyers, hoping to track the guns to Mexican drug cartel leaders and arrest them”.

These operations were done under the umbrella of Project Gunrunner, a project intended to stem the flow of firearms into Mexico by interdicting straw purchasers and gun traffickers within the United States. The case eventually became known in February 2010 as “Operation Fast and Furious” after agents discovered several suspects under investigation ran guns out of an auto parts store and street raced.

The tactic of letting guns walk, rather than interdicting them and arresting the buyers, led to controversy within the ATF. As the case continued, several members of the team, including John Dodson and Olindo Casa, became increasingly upset at the tactic of allowing guns to walk. Their standard training was to follow the straw purchasers to the hand-off to the cartel buyers, then arrest both parties and seize the guns. But according to Dodson, they watched guns being bought illegally and stashed on a daily basis, while their supervisors, including David Voth and Hope MacAllister, prevented the agents from intervening.

As a result of these actions, hundreds of people lost their lives, including Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.  He was murdered in cold blood on December 15, 2010.  I.C.E. Agent Jaime Zapata was also murdered as a direct result of a similar program run by DOJ and ATF out of Texas.

Eric Holder holds the dubious honor of becoming the first sitting presidential cabinet member to be voted in civil and criminal contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena order and refusing to turn over thousands of documents regarding the operation.  Yet no sanctions were placed upon him.  He was not disbarred and in fact, is still a practicing attorney in the state of California. Obama invoked executive privilege for the first time in his presidency over the same documents.

Brian Terry’s mother Josephine and his sister Kelly Terry-Willis will both testify before Congress along with ATF whistleblower John Dodson.  Dodson is the man that Americans can thank for exposing this criminal action being conducted by the Obama regime at the expense of both American taxpayer dollars and American lives. His public exposure of the DOJ and ATF and their extensive cover-up of the extensive gun running, as well as their part in the causing Terry’s murder, is documented in a book.  Released in 2013, the book is called The Unarmed Truth: My Fight to Blow the Whistle and Expose Fast and Furious.

U.S. Representative Darrell Issa (R–Calif.–49) estimated that more than 200 Mexicans were killed by guns linked to the operation. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, who dedicated extensive resources to investigating the scandal, has also been invited to testify.
