A father whose son was among the victims of Santa Barbara shooter Elliot Rodger says he wants to work with the killer’s father to prevent future massacres.

Richard Martinez’s son, Christopher Ross Michaels-Martinez, was the last of six people killed by the 22-year-old son of Hunger Games assistant director Peter Rodger.

Mr Martinez said: ‘I lost my son. He lost his son. We have that in common.

‘We want, if possible, that the deaths of our son and his son should mean something.’

Mr Martinez earlier shook with grief and rage as he described his ‘lost and broken’ family and the proliferation of guns he believes led to his son’s death.

Michaels-Martinez, a 20-year-old Santa Barbara student, grew up in the San Luis Obispo area as the only child of two attorneys who separated but maintained a cordial relationship, Mr Martinez added.

His father described him as studious child who was a keen reader – including of The Hunger Games and Harry Potter.

He was also a ‘skilled and determined’ athlete from a young age, playing soccer, football and basketball.

Mr Martinez, a criminal defence lawyer, said his son had ambitions to follow him into the legal profession.

‘He was very strong when he decided he wanted to do something and he was trained to argue for his position,’ he told The LA Times.

‘He was just a terrific kid in every way.’

Mr Martinez earlier spoke to reporters gathered outside a sheriff’s station for a news conference on Saturday, the day after the shootings near the University of California, Santa Barbara, where his son was a sophomore.

‘Our son Christopher and six others are dead,’ he said. ‘You don’t think it’ll happen to your child until it does.’

Martinez choked back tears as he spoke, then grew angrier as he talked about gun laws and lobbyists.

Richard Martinez went on to say that he blamed, ‘craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA,’ for his son’s death.

In his statement about the death of his son, Richard Martinez said: ‘Our family has a message for every parent out there. You don’t think it will happen to your child until it does.

‘Chris was a really great kid. Ask anyone who knew him. His death has left our family lost and broken.

‘Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA.

‘They talk about gun rights. What about Chris’s right to live? When will this insanity stop? When will enough people say ‘Stop this madness, we don’t have to live like this.’ Too many have died.

‘We should say to ourselves: Not one more.
